The other night, when Zoe was playing with her dolls and stuffed animals, she commented to me, “I’m the mommy.” “What do mommies do?” I asked her, and she responded, “They take care of their babies.” She made me laugh by going on to tell me what daddies do (“They go to Giants games”), but she also made me feel a bit like crying – in that good way – by showing that she gets what mommies are for. (I must be doing something right, I thought.)

And so, to all of you out there who have your own babies (even grown-up ones!) to take care of: Happy Mother’s Day! I’m honored to be a member of your club.
