Let it snow?

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

For more than a week, all everyone was talking about here was the chance of snow: Forecasters were predicting that San Francisco would get its first (significant) snowfall since 1976 over the weekend. As it turns out, all the buzz was for nothing (it only flurried at higher-elevation spots), and I couldn’t be happier. Not because I didn’t want it to snow at some point – I think it would be pretty cool to experience Midwest-type weather in San Francisco – but because we’re in Phoenix and I didn’t want the girls to miss it!

Guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer (forever?) to see a white San Francisco.

Dinnertime

Friday, February 25th, 2011

A few fun dinner videos are below. As you’ll see from the second, dinnertime in our house usually involves more than just eating!

An update on the updates

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

When Zoe turned two, I started cutting back on her updates; her month-to-month changes were less obvious, and I was able to summarize her developments in less frequent reports. Now that’s she beyond four, and not that different than she was a few months ago, I’m going to move to twice-yearly updates. But I still must acknowledge that she’s four and one quarter today; that (and our upcoming trip to Phoenix) is all she’s been talking about lately!

Early morning questions

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Very early this morning (5? 5:30? I didn’t look at the clock), I awoke to cries of “Mom-my!” When I went into Zoe’s room to see what she needed, we had the following exchange:

M: “Yes, Zoe?”
Z: “Mommy? Am I turning four-and-one-quarter tomorrow?”
M: “Yes, Zoe.”
Z: “Okay. And Mommy? Can we have pizza for dinner tomorrow night since I didn’t have pizza at school yesterday?” (Mondays are “Pizza Mondays” at Zoe’s school.)
M: “Yes, Zoe. But it’s very early. Can you try to go back to sleep?”
Z: “Okay.”

After I returned to bed, Zoe, obviously unable to get back to sleep, called out for me or Q every 15 minutes or so. (She needed water, then she had to go to the bathroom, then she needed help with her sheets, which had fallen on the floor.) Needless to say, I wasn’t able to get back to sleep either.

Such is life with small children!

At the zoo

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Another holiday, another day at the zoo for me and the girls. We visited the insect room, played on the playground, picked some flowers and saw lots of birds – which Avery loves. The cutest thing: Avery was insistent that we follow around one of the zoo’s free-roaming peacocks, but when he got too close to her, she cried out, “No!” and ran up to hug my leg. Wish I had gotten a picture of that!

Little shoppers

Monday, February 21st, 2011

The girls impressed me yesterday. We were out, running errands and doing various activities, for the entire day – and they did great. No whining, tantruming or running out of steam. It might have been due to the fact that we did some fun things for them: Zoe, for example, got to play in the kids area at IKEA for a good amount of time. And both girls were super excited about riding around in Target’s new double cart. It was like a ride to them!

20-month update

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

For the first time, I asked Zoe for help in summarizing what Avery is like at this age. “She likes to dance around sometimes,” was her answer. “And turn around. And play with toys.”

That’s a pretty good summary, but I can add to it a bit. Avery’s at a very active stage – dancing around, as Zoe said, or just running around (often chasing her sister). She doesn’t like to be alone and is known to follow people throughout the house or grab their hand to bring them where she wants. Among her favorite things: playing with her baby doll (still), playing the “night-night” game on one of the beds, sitting or standing on her sister’s little pink stool (which Avery is known to carry around the house), using said stool to reach the sink to brush her teeth or wash her hands, and, as mentioned before, copying her sister (or playing with whatever Zoe is playing with).

She’s talking more and more each month, and her vocabulary continues to grow. Just as was the case when Zoe was 20 months, the word we hear most often is “please,” which comes out as “peas.” And her most used phrase (aside from “thank you”): “A bite!” which she says any time (and I mean any time) she sees us eat. A few other phrases she’s picked up: “all done,” “the end,” “excuse me” (which we heard for the first time just a few days ago) and “sister crying.” When it comes to verbal skills, I’ve always thought Avery was a bit behind where Zoe was at her age. But a look back tells me that while Zoe knew more single words at this age, Avery started using multiple-word phrases around the same time as her sister did.

Avery also recently learned to nod yes or no, which makes communicating with her a bit easier. The only bad thing: she seems to favor the word “no;” more often than not (and as was the case with Zoe at this age, too) she’ll say “no” to whatever you ask. The usual exceptions: If you ask if she wants a snack or if she wants a “butterfly kiss” (a new favorite of hers).

Some quirky/fun things: She likes playing with socks; more specifically she likes wearing them on her hands as mittens. She also loves her sister’s scrunchies, and she wears them like bracelets. If you ask, “Who wants to (fill-in-the-blank)?” she’ll raise her hand, no matter what the question is. And, as mentioned before, if someone is crying she’ll come over to them with a hug. I admit it: I often pretend I’m crying, just because it’s so cute to see (and because I love her hugs).

She’s still a good sleeper and still very easy to put down. These days we plunk her in the crib, cover with her a blanket, and that’s it. “Night-night,” she’ll say to us, another recently picked-up phrase.

All is not perfect, of course: I had forgotten how strong-willed and tantrum-ish toddlers this age can be. Avery is known to tantrum or pout if she doesn’t get her way, and she’ll often throw things (toys, food) in frustration. The grumpy periods never last long, but I do occasionally mourn the days when we saw only the sunny side of Avery.

Lastly, Avery’s a bit over 30 pounds and just about 35 inches. My little baby, no more!

Copycat

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

I didn’t realize before having Avery how much little ones mimic their older siblings; these days, Avery seems to copy her sister’s every move! Yesterday afternoon, for example, Zoe wanted her hood up for a photo I was going to take of her outfit. As soon as Zoe put it on, Avery approached me, pointing to her hood and grunting that she wanted it on. When Zoe posed for a picture at the front door, Avery was right there with her, also posing. And that “cheese” face that Avery usually makes for photos? She got that from Zoe, too.

“I look like a mommy!”

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

It’s cold (well, relatively cold) here, so I suggested Zoe wear a sweater to school today. She requested a zip-up one, so I plucked from her dresser a cream-colored hoodie that zips up, along with a pair of skinny jeans. It was a new outfit for her (she hasn’t worn the sweater in awhile, and this was her first time in the jeans), and when she looked at herself in the mirror, she broke into a big smile and said, “I look like a mommy!” I had to laugh, too: She did look somewhat mommy-like, and it made me happy that this made her happy!

Be My Valentines

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

I’m a big fan of the various creations Elena has sent the girls home with throughout the years. (Two examples are here and here.) The latest, which Elena presented to me yesterday afternoon, is a cute little Valentine’s Day heart that reads, “Mom, Dad, Sister: Be My Valentines.” It’s definitely one for the baby book!

Little Valentines

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Zoe and Avery were very excited to get a Valentine’s Day card and stickers from my parents this weekend, and I’ve got the photo to prove it.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Bathtime

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Now that Avery is older and bigger, she can regularly bathe with her sister; the girls’ last few baths were together. I love it because cleaning two girls at once is a total time-saver, and Z and A just love being together. I probably shouldn’t post pics of our clothes-less kids, but here are some close-ups from their most recent bath.

Ashes, ashes

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Avery loves Ring Around the Rosie: She recently learned it at Elena’s and often goes around the house singing her favorite part (“ashes, ashes”). Zoe decided to sing it with her in the kitchen the other night, and I captured one of their go-arounds on video.

600!

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Avery is 600 days old, and it occurred to me that we haven’t taken our traditional every-100-days photo (with Lou) in a long time. Like, a really long time. So, before she headed off to bed, we made sure to snap a few photos – and Zoe, who last had her photo taken with Lou when she was Avery’s age, got in on the action too.

Look how small they make Lou, who was once close to their size, look! Amazing…

More from FanFest

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

I already blogged about our experience at last weekend’s FanFest, but I didn’t mention how much fun Avery had. As you’ll see in the video below, running around the field, with baseball in hand, made her very happy. (And I apologize if the video causes dizziness. It was a tough one to take!)
