Sorry sisters

Wednesday, December 31st, 2014

The girls have spent a lot of time together over the last ten days; while they’ve gotten along for the most part, there have been a few rough moments.  After being quite mean to one another a few days ago, we put both girls in a time-out – with Zoe in her room and Avery in the playroom. After a few minutes of quiet I discovered that Avery had written an apology note and slipped it through the door to her sister; Zoe responded with a note of her own.

“Rain is good for everyone”

Tuesday, December 30th, 2014

It’s very cold (and dry) in San Francisco this week, but before the cold was the rain. One morning I complained that it was raining again and Avery cried out, “But rain is good for the trees! And if we didn’t have trees then we wouldn’t have oxygen and we couldn’t breathe and and we would die.” Her sister then piped up: “So rain is good for everyone!”

Five-and-a-half-year update

Monday, December 29th, 2014

I’m a bit late (10 days to be exact) with Avery’s latest update, but better late than never!

Though Avery’s not that much different than how she was during our last update, several big things have happened in the last six months. The biggest, of course, is that she said good-bye to the JCC and started kindergarten. Orientation day was a bit tough – with her not wanting to enter the classroom – but it’s been smooth sailing ever since. (She later told me about that morning, “I just acted like that because it’s a new classroom and a new school. But I won’t be like that again.” And she hasn’t been!)

She really likes school. Though she said a week or two into the new school year that kindergarten was boring because “all they do is teach us,” she has since had a change of heart, telling me that she’s in the “best kindergarten in the whole wide world.” She has a different teacher than her sister did, and the fit is just perfect. She talks about her teachers and what she has learned from them often, and they reported to us recently that she has really blossomed, and shown her true self, over the last few months.

In terms of academics, the first semester of kindergarten has focused on letter and number formation, basic math, and beginning reading via sight words. She’s not reading full books yet but she can read several dozen words and is constantly sounding words out and asking us how to spell words, which are good starts. Before kindergarten she had little interest in reading, but that’s not the case now.

As for friendships, she remains close to Naomi, a good friend from preschool, and she’s developed relationships with several other girls in her class. She is also quite taken by AJ, who she remains engaged to.

Avery, who appears quiet and sweet to those who first meet her, has a big personality. She’s very silly – telling jokes, talking about things she knows she shouldn’t (like the butt, which she finds hysterical to talk about), and sometimes singing funny songs. She likes to jump on top of people, too – if I’m ever on all fours (looking for or cleaning something), she inevitably hops on my back with a huge laugh. She also likes to perform, often dancing around for us or hamming it up if we ask to take her photo (which, as readers know, happens quite often). And she has a big laugh; I like this one recent picture because it captures how she looks much of the time.

She can be feisty – yelling at her sister if she feels frustrated or wronged. (Despite their closeness we’ve seen more sibling rivalry and fighting over the last six months.) She can be defiant with us, too – saying “I don’t care” when we tell her she’s lost a privilege for bad behavior. And, yet, she still has a very sweet side. She often uses a baby voice (“Mama’s lap”) and climbs up for a hug, and she’s very affectionate – rubbing my hair or face or touching my necklace, much like she did when she was a baby – when we’re cuddling. She’s often very sweet to her sister, too; they have a very close relationship and now that they share a room the first thing Avery does in the morning is call out for Zoe.

Speaking of the room: that’s another big development. We bought the girls bunk beds and moved Avery into her sister’s room just last month. I’ve fretted at times – especially when they bicker at bedtime or when one girl insists that we leave the door open and hallway light on, and the other complains it’s too bright – that perhaps we made a mistake. But all in all they seem happy with the move; the adjustment was very easy, with Zoe not complaining when we started moving Avery’s clothes and books in, and Avery not expressing sadness over her old room (which has been reconfigured as a playroom).

Other stuff: Avery still loves playing with her sister and doing things with her like throwing tea parties, opening stores or restaurants, and playing school. While we very much have an on-the-go lifestyle, one of her favorite things this fall has been to stick around home on Sundays and either watch football with her dad or entertain friends while the dads watch football. (Almost every Sunday, she asks who’s coming over for a football party.) She has gotten more sensitive as of late, often saying she’s scared of the dark or of monsters at bedtime, and she always asks if there are scary parts or “bad guys” in any movie she watches. (She’s very concerned about bad guys.) She often asks questions I wouldn’t have thought of, and don’t always have the answer to, like whether God sleeps. She can be a big tease, and she recently started to poke fun at how sentimental I am. We’ll be at a store and she’ll pick up a baby shoe or point to a crib and say, “Remember when I was that small, Mama? Doesn’t that make you want to cry?” Lastly, one of my favorite things about Avery is how she always notices and admires a pretty leaf or a flower – we can be anywhere and she’ll spot one and stop. “Look, Mama, it’s so pretty,” she’ll say, literally reminding me of the importance of stopping to smell the flowers.

17-Mile Drive

Monday, December 29th, 2014

On Christmas Day the four of us visited the gorgeous (but chilly) Lovers Point Park in Pacific Grove, just a few minutes away from the aquarium, and then took the scenic 17-Mile Drive to Pebble Beach. It’s been years (pre-kids for sure) since I made that drive, and I had forgotten how beautiful it is!

At the aquarium

Saturday, December 27th, 2014

When I asked Zoe what she wanted to do over our two-week winter break, she suggested we go to the Monterey Aquarium. A quick look back at this blog showed me that we hadn’t visited in more than three years, so it seemed like a good idea. We headed down on Christmas Eve Day and, as we predicted, it was relatively empty. But even better than the lack of crowds was how much fun the girls had. Avery, who had just turned two during our last visit, had no recollection of being there, so she was seeing things through brand-new eyes. She loved the touch pools (the squishy sea cucumber was her favorite animal there) and the various exhibits (especially the jellies). And Zoe was particularly into a detective game for kids and into the sea otters (which she declared as her favorite new animal – sorry, hippos). We’re already planning our next visit back!

Last night of Hanukkah

Friday, December 26th, 2014

For the last night of Hanukkah the girls invited over their friend Sophie. It was Sophie’s first time celebrating the holiday, so Zoe and Avery showed her the ropes and gave her a little present. And then they headed to Sophie’s for a semi-sleepover (semi, because Zoe and Avery came home around 10, shortly after they finally asleep). As an excited Avery said that morning (mimicking what her sister said just a week earlier), “This is the best day of my life!”

More snow in San Francisco

Wednesday, December 24th, 2014

We went to Zoo Lights on Sunday night, and as part of it there was a machine pumping out large amounts of snow (i.e. tiny bubbles that look like snow). It’s a little hard to see them in the photo, but the snowflakes were surrounding Avery below.

Best mama?

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2014

The other night, Avery and I were snuggling and sharing a sweet moment. “Sometimes you’re the best mama in the whole world,” she told me as she caressed my hair, as she likes to do. “And the other times?” I asked. “Sorta mean,” she answered matter-of-factly. “But I still love you.”

Hanukkah gifts

Monday, December 22nd, 2014

Each year the girls make Hanukkah-themed crafts and objects at school. (Let’s just say we now have a lot of menorahs.) This year Avery brought home her creations to give as gifts: For me and Q, a menorah that reminds me of a baseball diamond (not sure if it’s a coincidence that she painted it orange like the Giants), and for her sister, a painted plate.

Hannah the Hanukkah Fairy

Sunday, December 21st, 2014

There’s a popular book series for young kids called Rainbow Magic; each book revolves around a different fairy (e.g. Cara the Camp Fairy, Stella the Star Fairy, Emma the Easter Fairy) whose magical objects have been stolen by the series’ villain, Jack Frost. The books are formulaic and can hardly be considered high literature, but Zoe and some of her friends still love them! Earlier this year, Zoe and I (when looking through the titles of the hundreds published) discovered that there were no Jewish-holiday themed ones, and we decided to write our own story. And so, Hannah the Hanukkah Fairy was born.

Zoe came up with the outline for the story a few months ago, and we’ve been slowly working on writing it ever since. (We put the finishing touches on it on Thursday night.) Working on the 1,500-word story, which Zoe shared with her classmates and teachers on Friday, was a lot of fun for me, and I hope for Zoe, too. And more importantly, I hope it teaches her more about creativity and innovation: If something doesn’t exist and you will really want it, then just go ahead and create/build/plan/write it!

Best day ever, part II

Saturday, December 20th, 2014

Two more pics from Zoe’s “best day,” with the second one from when Q, Avery and I came to her classroom for a belated birthday celebration.

Best day ever!

Friday, December 19th, 2014

“Today is the best day of my life!” Zoe cried out when she woke up this morning. The reason for her excitement: It’s Pajama and Pancake Day at school, it’s her “share day” and there’s an afternoon celebration for the November and December birthdays in her class, and we’re going to a Hanukkah party at the house of good friends of ours this evening. She was all smiles when I dropped off her and her sister…

First field trip

Thursday, December 18th, 2014

When Avery woke up yesterday morning, the first thing she did was run through the house and yell, “Field trip!!” She was, indeed, about to take her first field trip – ever – and go to the Chabot Space Center in Oakland. I wasn’t able to make the trip with her (darn!), but some mom-friends sent me a few photos and reported that she had a good time.

One candle

Wednesday, December 17th, 2014

For weeks, the girls have been excited about the arrival of Hanukkah, which happened last night. As soon it turned dark, Avery insisted that we open one of her presents right away; turns out she had made a menorah at school and wanted to surprise us and use it on the first night. Done!
